Things begin to pick up speed as answers to recent questions begin to unfold. While the Druid and his Eliminators are brought down it’s not by the hand of the Crusaders but by an old, forgotten foe. Phantasmon! The otherworldly sorcerer was able to tap into the Druid’s earth-based powers using them to free himself from his imprisonment in the Pit of Monsters. Revealed as the reason behind Druid’s problems controlling his powers there is an even bigger revelation to come – Phantasmon is Darkling’s father! Will this be a case of “like father, like daughter”? Or will Darkling be able to break from Phantasmon’s influence to help her fallen comrades?

The Start Of A Bold New Era! The promise at the end of issue 17 has been fulfilled! After a few months hiatus, the Mighty Crusaders are back and better than ever!
Even though the team is no more after the events of the last issue, when D.E.M.O.N. agents begin stealing a variety of high tech equipment it doesn’t take long before Lancelot Strong – the Shield, the original Shield and the Comet to begin investigating. When the trail leads to a D.E.M.O.N. stronghold the trio calls in their comrade-in-arms the Jaguar, who arrives fresh from one of his archaeology digs with Brazil’s own O Vingador in tow. Things get strange, though, when it’s revealed that D.E.M.O.N. are trying to pierce the dimensional barriers. When the experiment goes awry things go from bad to worse – until help arrives in the form of former member Darkling and the mysterious Mister Midnight. The group is able to thwart terrorist organization’s plans, but not before the machine reaches into the depths of time and pulls a she-devil out of time, CatGirl! Sensing a moment, the original Shield makes and offer … and the Mighty Crusaders are reborn! But what is this great cosmic threat that Mister Midnight is alluding to and what has driven O Vingador to join the Crusdaers?

In This Issue …
Homecoming!
After the devastating attack from the arch-villains last issue the Crusaders are left homeless and distinctly aware of the dangers posed by having their headquarters right in the heart of Manhattan. So what else is the team to do but go house hunting! After looking at several site the team settles upon Bannerman’s Castle, the old Hudson River arsenal warehouse. Unfortunately, the old rumors and legends of the Castle being haunted turn out to be all too true. As they begin to move in the daemon Thu-Gheemith, the Green Ghoul, is loosed upon the unsuspecting team! Not seen since the days of WWII when the Ghoul battled Mr. Justice himself, can the team stave off this attack from beyond? More importantly, what is the significance of the crates marked Burris Laboratories that are being moved into the Castle. Also, beginning this issue – the mystery of how Lancelot Strong and Darkling survived their seeming deaths! Oh, and one more thing – who is the unknown figure recruiting villains from the shadows??

D.E.M.O.N.S!
The team is called in when D.E.M.O.N. launches an attack on New York City. It doesn’t take long for them to find out what’s going on- Monster-Master has been hiding out in one of Spy-Lord’s old bases, on the run from D.E.M.O.N.. He was foolish enough to steal some secret weapon from the Nameless One himself and now he has sent his agents to get it back. A race across the world ensues as the team decides that anything the Nameless One wants that bad he shouldn’t have. When D.E.M.O.N. captures Monster-Master the team decides that they have no choice but to assault the D.E.M.O.N. citadel itself. On top of all that action in this issue we learn why O Vingador joined the Crusaders. To exact revenge on D.E.M.O.N. for the death of his wife. Also – the mystery of how Lancelot Strong and Darkling survived deepens. And even more – that mystery figure is still recruiting villains. But for what purpose?? Could it maybe have something to do with the fact that the next issue is the double sized 25th???

The villainous Queen of Hearts, Queen Cleopatra, herself a disembodied spirit found Darkling floating in Limbo and possessed her unconscious body. CatGirl and Lancelot Strong have left and the team’s ranks shrink even more when Mister Midnight is recalled to his squadron. Sensing what is happening O Vingador also decides to take his leave, returning to Brazil.
At a crossroads Jaguar seeks out Bill Higgins, who had taken over the roll of the Shield again from his father last issue, and asks him to help form a new Crusaders team. Bill agrees to take up the challenge, though he returns to the version of the Shield costume he himself wore in the 60’s. Jaguar seeks out Steel Sterling and the Fox to ask them to join while Comet, wanting to have a sense of continuity with the team, asks the original Wizard to join. While he turns the Comet down he does introduce him to his granddaughter, the all-new Wizard! At first the Comet is skeptical but when the young Wizard is able to conjure Mister Justice himself and convince him to join the new line-up Comet has to admit he’s impressed. Shield contacts Pow-Girl and the Web to see if they would like to join. The Web passes but Pow-Girl jumps at the chance to join the team. A final moment of sadness as the Comet also announces he has chosen to leave is balanced by the team being contacted by Nebula of the Agents of Atlantis. Having heard what’s going on she asks to join. A final moment of tradition as the Shield recites the Crusaders’ pledge – and a new Crusaders team is born!
