It's been a number of years since I wrote that
story and I never did see the art. It was at a point where Archie was no
longer sending proof sheets to me. Which was a problem, because often I
could correct mistakes before it went to press.
Many of the supporting cast in that story were based on real people that
I worked with at the time. Gary Luben was a co-worker of mine. It was
fun to see how Ayers portrayed him from the photo I sent him. It was
truly an honor to have written stories about The Shield. He was a
favorite of mine growing up. (Yeah, I'm old!) It's too bad the 10Down
story never was done. I know Ayers had started on it. That was going to
be a killer story. 10Down was a prison, 10 stories underground. The
Shield's boss went there to interview a recently captured bad guy. This
bad guy managed to override 10Down's computer system and many villains
escaped into the place. The lights were now on emergency and guards were
being wiped out, left and right.
The Shield arrives and after some problems descending into 10Down,
manages to get into the place. I had created one villain that was
extremely scary. You were supposed to see his eyes and outline, because
he stayed in the darkened part of 10Down.
The Shield's lady boss almost ran into him and only the arrival of The
Shield saved her.
Anyway, thanks for posting the story. It was a fun read, after all these
years.
