ORIGIN

When Joe Higgins opted to abdicate his role as the new Shield, that duty and the overwhelming weight of responsibility that went along with it fell to 1st Lieutenant Steven Barnes,
     Leader of the elite military guerrilla team known as "The Corps", Barnes and his teammates were originally in contention with Joe Higgins as potential candidates for Project: Shield, when Higgins was eventually selected to wear the recreated armor of the legendary hero of the 1950's, Barnes and the others wished Joe well in the best sense of military comradeship and accepted supplementary duty connected to Project: Shield.
     From a military standpoint, Barnes represents an optimal replacement for Joe Higgins, even though he does not possess his natural strength and will of necessity, It's Barnes's personal side, however, that allows him to bring a totally different dynamic to his tenure as the Shield, born in the rural hills of Pennsylvania, Barnes is entrenched in the ideals and virtues of the family and small town America.

ORIGIN

Wayne Sidmondson was the owner of the first "McBonnie Burger" Franchise in his hometown of St. George, Mississippi. He was also a collector who gathered weapons and torture instruments. One day he acquired an executioner's hood dating back to the Middle Ages. It turned out that the hood was cursed, so that "Whosoever wears the Hood, be they compelled: Do only good!" Putting on the hood, Sidmondson became a crime fighter, protecting his home town of St. George.

ORIGIN

Las Vegas' resident hero is the masked crime fighter Black Jack. Black Jack was somehow connected to the Web...never explained, but he worked with Jason Troy Sr. (Fly's grandpa) in "the old days" and we find out later in the Fly series that Jason Troy Sr. was in the Web.

ORIGIN

Rob Connors' parents were working in a laboratory in a remote part of Alaska. Rob went to visit them, only to find the lab destroyed. Seeking to summon assistance, he trued to repair the lab's damaged radio antenna, but it collapsed on him. There was an explosion of light and energy, which somehow granted him superhuman powers. Returning to civilization, Rob became the Comet, a costumed hero.

It was later revealed that Rob's body was being held in stasis by some aliens, and that somehow he switched brains with one of the aliens, so he believed himself to be the actual Rob Connors, and didn't realize he was the alien until next to the last issue of the series...died as a villain in Crucible 6

CRUSADERS

While exploring swamplands near his home, Josh Hawkins came across fireballs mentioned in local Indian legends. Noticing that they seemed to be coming out of a hole in space, he entered the void and was transported to another reality. But an explosion returned him violently to our world, now equipped with tremendous powers, which he used to become the hero Fireball.

While working towards Native American rights, Eric Adams was beaten close to death and blinded by those who opposed his viewpoint. An Indian Shaman granted him two gifts after he suffered this loss - a bag of magical charms, and a raven through who's eyes he could see again. Adams became the Hangman to continue to fight corporate corruption.

During the era of the Cold War, America's number-one hero was Roger Higgins, a scientist who had developed a unique armor and used it to fight crime as the Shield, defender of liberty In the earliest days of his career, his only companion in the fight for justice was his teenage sidekick, Dusty, the Boy Detective; in later years, the Shield led a group of super powered individuals who called themselves the American Crusaders. Working within the sanctity of their secret headquarters beneath the FBI building, the Crusaders who answered only to J. Edgar Hoover and to the President routed the foes of this nation and battled those who would compromise America's values and standards.

ORIGIN

Joe Higgins, was a career officer in the U.S. Army, one of the most highly decorated servicemen of his time. His father, Brigadier General Marion Higgins, the Commanding Officer of America's Air Reconnaissance and Military Strike installation, had staked his entire Army career on the creation of a unique Suit of armor that could turn its wearer into America's mightiest secret weapon. General Higgins, inspired by the exploits of the Shield, the long-vanished star-spangled champion active during the '50s and '60s, made it his self-appointed mission to recreate this symbol of patriotic liberty around a soldier who would unknowingly serve as his puppet, setting his sights on Joe, he realized that his son was, physically and psychologically, the perfect candidate for Project: Shield, but Joe's high rank precluded him from involvement, General Higgins took care of that by secretly framing and disgracing Joe, arranging for a court-martial that busted him to Sergeant and allowed Joe to undergo the year long training that culminated in his role as the new Shield.
