Last time The Captain checked, The Shield was a man...

Or a super-spy organization now run by Director Phil Coulson...

Or a group of heels in the WWE...

Or a TV show starring Michael (The Thing) Chiklis...

Or a weapon used by Captain America (who debuted a year later than the other guy, but "owns" the red, white & blue super hero franchise hands down)...

The powers-that-be at Archie Comics continually push The Shield as the "first patriotic super hero," but guess what? No one gives a $#|+! And they think changing the character to a woman is going to make a difference? C'mon! The Captain says if Archie Comics has that much cash to burn, will they mind giving The Captain some lunch money?

It is possible that this Shield is some kind of legacy though. Which would not necessarily remove the existing history/continuity. :)

If the WWII factor is retained, then there are plenty of gaps to use to explain such a legacy.

And Archie already has history in that kind of legacy approach (the Shield, the Fox, the Web, the New Crusaders). :)

If you count the various sons, DC/!mpact versions and alternate Archie universe versions there have been no fewer than ten (or maybe even eleven?) Shields prior to this new one (phew!)

The Shield has been reincarnated almost as much as Doctor Who!

The artwork is quite good but I don't know anything about what she's supposed to be. I assume the latest version of the Shield? I've always preferred the Lancelot Strong Shield to the red headed version, though.
