The MLJ.... The "mighty" Legion of Justice.

Yes, that's what the newspapers started to call them.... The MLJ ....The "Mighty" LEGION OF JUSTICE.

I witnessed a number of key events that I'll try to re-tell. Some might change from time to time... but so be it. Memory betrays even the best of us. I write this down in my own private diary because I don't want to betray those who confided in me and I don't want the public to know everything. Secret identities and actual events may shed some light on the historical events to come.
I need to get this down before I "go". You know, into "that good night."
...."Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light."....Yes, I guess I'm raging "against the dying of the light" and I want to get this story down. This story that I know and others can only imagine. Maybe 50 years from now, someone will read this and it will have some historical meaning.... have some existential meaning that maybe even I can't imagine.

(And, yes, I know, Perry Chase is the Press Guardian. I am Perry Chase.)
Image
Yes, that's me. A gun in each hand, ... ready to fight for Press Freedom.

'One in the same.'
And yes, my father owned the newspaper that I work for; The Daily Express. It's a good newspaper.
Anyway....

The first I think I became aware of them was when THE SHIELD made his debut appearance around January of 1940.

Image

At the time, I was nothing but a cub reporter hungry for a good story. My father was hoping I'd turn into a 'good newspaper man'.!! For a while, none of my stories were working out for me. Finally, after a few brief successes,
I was able to make some "contacts" inside the office of the F.B.I. and I found out that Bureau Chief Hoover had some kind of connection to this new 'mystery man' known as THE SHIELD.
AND through some digging around and pure luck I found out a significant Government secret.
... that Joe Higgins was The Shield.

Then I found out that J. Edgar Hoover sent Joe Higgins, "G-Man Extraordinary", THE SHIELD, on a special assignment to stop the sabotage of America's war arsenals and attacks on our Merchant Marine ships.

Image

Image

Hoover, then serving as the head of the new department called The Federal Bureau of Investigation(the F.B.I.), had known Higgins' father and there was some kind of special relationship between Joe Higgins and the "Director."

Although the Hotel Braganza was rocked by a terrific explosion and fire,The Shield made quite a splash in the newspapers for busting up a German spy ring and bringing a Nazi master spy, Klotz, to justice.

Image

Before the smoke cleared, The Shield had disappeared into the night, leaving his calling card: four stars on a shield, one star each for what The Shield stood for: Truth, Justice, Patriotism, and Courage. It's very hard to find people like that in the world today.

Image

The Shield was called AMERICA'S 1ST PATRIOTIC HERO, and rightly so. He was the first to put on and wear the colors of the red, white, and blue. He was one of the Greatest Heroes, 'Mystery Men', America had and we were all glad to be Americans because of him. He was a Patriotic Hero who we were proud of and he never let us down. He encompassed the great American ideals and he was America's symbol of everything good about our Country.

He is really chemist Joe Higgins, the son of Lieutenant Tom Higgins who was slain by German saboteur, Hans Fritz in the Black Tom explosion, for which Tom was blamed while working on a chemical formula for super-strength which the Nazis were after. After his death, Joe continued to work on it while continuing his studies of chemistry. Joe finally figured out the solution, which meant applying the chemicals to certain parts of his anatomy: Sacrum, Heart, Innervation, Eyes, Lungs, Derma, and using x-rays to give him super strength, being able to make great leaps, and invulnerability.

Image

The initials also gave him his name. The SHIELD. His white costume becomes the familiar colors of the red, white, and blue under the process.

Image

He became an FBI agent (whose secret identity is known only to FBI Chief J. Edgar Hoover) after clearing his father's name, and fought foreign agents and other threats to the U.S.

ImageImage

The Shield wasn't the first of these costumed heroes to appear....but he was the most colorful.

Another crime-fighting hero and patriot that appear on the scene before The Shield was ....THE WIZARD.
THE WIZARD was one Blane Whitney, the Great-Great-Grandson of General Steven Whitney who was General George Washington's Chief Aide during the Revolutionary War. Blane was, like Higgins, a great and true patriotic American.

Blane Whitney, or if you will, THE WIZARD ...was THE MAN WITH THE SUPER-BRAIN. Blane had a number of mental powers that I'm not sure I completely understand but he certainly was blessed with a "super-brain."

Image

I think Blane had the power of precognition, and premonition - - kind of a perception of events before they happen. I know he could hypnotize people. I saw him do it once.

He also seemed to be able to conjure up pictures in his mind of things taking place a great distance away. Remote viewing - I think they called it. A gathering of information at a distance. Don't ask me how.!!?

Blane had accumulated a good deal of money and hired some really quality help. One mechanic he hired was called "Hot-Shot"... something or other. I could never find out his true name. Another was someone they called "the Architect." Together, the three of them built fast cars, planes, and even a mystery submarine for Blane to use when he was The Wizard.

Image

Blane, as The Wizard, in his early appearances, wore a tuxedo and cape. At first, his cape and mask were white, but they were soon switched to a more striking red with a blue suit.
Image
Image

ImageImage

During the Russian Invasion crossover storyline (which featured the Shield) where he was briefly blinded by an enemy attack, he developed a bullet-proof, explosion-resistant costume that consisted of blue tights with red trunks, cape, and mask. He wore this costume ...."super-hero garb"...from then on.

Image

Usually, after each adventure, Blane would leave a note from the Wizard that read: "Our country / right or wrong / our country / The Wizard." Yes, Blane was a true patriotic American. He believed in this Country and the freedom and liberty it gave its people. From Valley Forge until today, Blane thought America was the greatest Country forge by God and man in history. I always agreed with him on that.

Blane Whitney also had a girlfriend named Jane Barlowe who was a reporter at the Daily Citizen, a newspaper Blane had inherited from a murdered friend. (And yes, I knew Jane and I had sometimes worked with her. A beautiful young lady but definitely "upper crust" ....if you know what I mean.) And Blane tried to cover his work as THE WIZARD by playing the "idle rich boy". A ploy that wasn't always successful.

Image

This is what she looked like in "real life".

Image

Now Blane Whitney had "friends in high places", so to speak. He had a brother, Grover Whitney, who was the Chief of the Naval Intelligence Service. Anytime Naval Intel had big problems, Grover contacted Blane and THE WIZARD was on the case.

Image
Grover encoded his message to Blane. Decoded: "information had been received of a Japanese plot to blow up the American Carrier base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. (Blane, this looks like a job for THE WIZARD.) Investigate immediately".
Image

Soon after, The Wizard added a partner: Roy, the Super-boy.!!
Together, they were a formidable team in the battle of Evil and Injustice.
Image

The time was a strange one. The American public well remembered the horrible carnage of the First World War and almost nobody wanted any part of the dark clouds on the horizon. There was WAR stirring in Europe
....a madman named Adolf Hitler was beginning to "annex" land and was laying the groundwork of war.

Image

Hitler had surrounded himself with people like Himmler, Goering, Goebbels and the S.S. to aid him in his totalitarian rule and his attempt to conquer the World.
In 1938, after Hitler annexed Austria, he then did the same to Czechoslovakia's Sudetenland.

Mussolini, the leader of Italy's National Fascist Party, had established dictatorial authority by both legal and extraordinary means, aspiring to create a totalitarian state.

Image

Things began to look even worse as Italy's dictator, Mussolini, too, began to prepare for war and forge a partnership with Hitler.

Image

In Asia, Japan had invaded China and a War in the East was raging.

Image

Hideki Tōjō was a general of the Imperial Japanese Army (IJA), the leader of the Imperial Rule Assistance Association, and the 40th Prime Minister of Japan during most of World War II, from October 17, 1941 to July 22, 1944. As Prime Minister, he was directly responsible for the attack on Pearl Harbor, which initiated war between Japan and the United States. In the summer of 1940, Tojo became Minister of War in the government and he saw that Japan's future lay with the European dictators - especially Hitler - who were much admired in Japan. While the European dictators were admired and respected in Japan, the opposite was true for America. The people of America were thought of as decadent, lazy and without scruples compared to the disciplined workforce of Japan that worshipped their emperor, Hirohito.

As Minister of War, Tojo made it clear that Japan should push south in the Far East and take land owned by European nations.

The U.S. President Roosevelt, in the midst of his 1936 presidential campaign, had declared: "We shun political commitments which might entangle us in foreign wars... We seek to isolate ourselves completely from war."

In early 1939, FDR tried to redirect U.S. foreign policy toward greater involvement in the European crisis with growing concern for England and France but he was acutely aware that U.S. public opinion did not support him.

Image

On September 1, 1939, German armed forces invaded Poland and henceforth Hitler's main energies were devoted to the conduct of a war he had unleashed to dominate Europe and secure Germany's "living space."

The first phase of World War II was dominated by German Blitzkrieg tactics: sudden shock attacks against airfields, communications, military installations, using fast mobile armor and infantry to follow up on the first wave of bomber and fighter aircraft. Poland was overrun in less than one month, Denmark and Norway in two months, Holland, Belgium, Luxemburg and France in six weeks. After the fall of France in June 1940 only Great Britain stood firm. And for a time, only one man stood alone in the defense of Western Civilization.

Image

Sir Winston Churchill, Prime Minister of Great Britain.

In the United States, The America First Committee (AFC) was the foremost non-interventionist pressure group against the American entry into World War II. Peaking at 800,000 paid members in 450 chapters, it was one of the largest anti-war organizations in American history. Started on September 4, 1940, it was dissolved on December 10, 1941, three days after the attack on Pearl Harbor had brought the war to America.

The AFC was established on September 4, 1940, by Yale Law School student R. Douglas Stuart, Jr. (heir to the Quaker Oats fortune), along with other students, including future President Gerald Ford, future Peace Corps director Sargent Shriver, and future U.S. Supreme Court justice Potter Stewart.[3] At its peak, America First claimed 800,000 dues-paying members in 450 chapters, located mostly in a 300-mile radius of Chicago.

The AFC gained much of its early strength by merging with the more left-wing Keep America Out of War Committee, whose leaders had included such mainstays of America First as Norman Thomas and John T. Flynn.

It claimed 135,000 members in 60 chapters in Illinois, its strongest state.[4] Fundraising drives produced about $370,000 from some 25,000 contributors. Nearly half came from a few millionaires such as William H. Regnery, H. Smith Richardson of the Vick Chemical Company, General Robert E. Wood of Sears-Roebuck, Sterling Morton of Morton Salt Company, publisher Joseph M. Patterson (New York Daily News) and his cousin, publisher Robert R. McCormick (Chicago Tribune).

The AFC was never able to get funding for its own public opinion poll. The New York chapter received slightly more than $190,000, most of it from its 47,000 contributors. Since it never had a national membership form or national dues, and local chapters were quite autonomous, historians suggest that the organization's leaders had no idea how many "members" it had.

Serious organizing of the America First Committee took place in Chicago not long after the September 1940 establishment. Chicago was to remain the national headquarters of the committee. To preside over their committee, America First chose General Robert E. Wood, the 61 year-old chairman of Sears, Roebuck and Co.. While Wood would accept only an interim position, he remained at the head of the committee until it was disbanded in the days after the attack on Pearl Harbor.

The America First Committee had its share of prominent businessmen as well as the sympathies of political figures including Democratic Senators Burton K. Wheeler of Montana and David I. Walsh of Massachusetts, Republican Senator Gerald P. Nye of North Dakota, and Socialist Party leader Norman Thomas.

Other celebrities supporting America First were novelist Sinclair Lewis, poet E. E. Cummings, Washington socialite Alice Roosevelt Longworth, film producer Walt Disney, and actress Lillian Gish. Architect Frank Lloyd Wright attempted to join, but he was rejected when the local board decided that he had a "reputation for immorality". The many student chapters included future celebrities, such as author Gore Vidal (as a student at Phillips Exeter Academy), and the future President Gerald Ford, at Yale Law School with its most prominent spokesman being aviator Charles A. Lindbergh.

No one, it seemed, wanted to get into another bloody war in Europe.

During 1941, Franklin Roosevelt pushed to have the United States' factories become an "arsenal of democracy" for the Allies—France, Britain, and Russia. As Americans learned more about the war's atrocities, isolationist sentiment diminished.

Image

President Roosevelt took advantage, standing firm against the Axis Powers of Germany, Italy, and Japan. Bipartisan support in Congress expanded the Army and Navy and increased the flow of supplies to the Allies. Hopes of keeping the United States out of war ended with the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.

Roosevelt was very concerned about internal subversion and German saboteurs so I suppose he had turned to Hoover at the FBI to do what he could. I think J. Edgar Hoover was only too glad when Joe Higgins appeared in his office one day to offer his assistance as ...THE SHIELD.

Image

Image

Joe Higgins goes to work for the F.B.I. as a Secret Agent with only its Director, J. Edgar Hoover, aware of his secret identity. Joe, as THE SHIELD, catches "Hans Fritz and the whole spy ring gets rounded up.

Image

Then, a quite AMAZING thing happened!!

Image

It was fated to happen that THE SHIELD, working for the FBI, and THE WIZARD, working for naval intelligence, would meet.

Image

ImageImage

They did have one adventure together against The Wizard's villain: The Master-Mind... but it ended well:
Image

Although The Shield and The Wizard's first meetings were brief, they did, finally, become a team.

And, soon after the teaming of The Shield and The Wizard...
The Shield took on a young partner... Dusty, the Boy Detective....
Image

The Shield-Wizard team was soon joined by their young partners:
The Shield's DUSTY, the Boy Detective
Image

and The Wizard's Roy, the Super-Boy.!!
Image

ImageImage

Image

(Sometime later, the boys, Dusty and Roy, teamed-up as The Boy Buddies and fought crime and saboteurs.)

ImageImage

Image

Together, THE SHIELD and Dusty, the Boy Detective and THE WIZARD and Roy, the Super-Boy became a very effective, action-packed foursome.

Image

The four of them hadn't been together very long...

....and they were joined in an adventure that brought together The Shield, Dusty, The Wizard, Roy and ....
Kardak, The Mystic Magician
ImageImage

Mr. Justice Image

(both very strange, mysterious guys),

...and Kalthar, the Giant Man-- King of the Jungle.Image

Image

That's when the newspapers started to call those seven " The World's Greatest Heroes"
That's when the Press gave them a name:
THE MIGHTY LEGION OF JUSTICE... And THE MLJ Legacy was born....
... The MLJ had been unleashed on the enemy Axis Powers and unchained on the criminal element in the United States, ....and nothing would be the same again.

Image
OVER the years, the roll call of The Legion changed from time to time--- but their purpose never wavered.

They fought for Freedom, Liberty, and Justice ....for AMERICA ... and All Mankind.

PART II
THE LEGION OF JUSTICE:

I also know this:
That Heinrich Himmler, head of the S.S. --was deeply into the Occult and Mysticism.

Image

He establish ...or at least, brought together, The COUNCIL OF THE SEVEN, (THE Sinister Seven)...an occult group that was serving the Reich.... and directly serving Hitler.

This is from:
Hitler's Occult War by Michael FitzGerald:

"Every dictatorship requires a justification, either historical or moral, and Hitler rooted his in antiscientific mumbo-jumbo, Wagnerian legend, and Satanism. This chilling investigation reveals that Hitler consulted Nostradamus before making key military decisions; that the Thulists, a sect that practiced human sacrifice and sexual perversions, founded the German Workers Party; and that black masses were conducted for elite SS corps at a "Black Camelot" in Wewelsberg. The Nazis even had their own occult bureau, the Ahnenerbe, whose research into bizarre cosmological theory, astrology, and UFOs exhausted more funds than America’s atom bomb. Against this powerful armory of evil, Stalin and Churchill employed psychic advisors, the latter even holding high-level talks with Aleister Crowley. White witches attempted to thwart "Operation Sealion" (Hitler’s planned invasion) through coven rituals. In the United States, research into mind control was vigorously pursued, and the government, in a shadowy affair known as the Philadelphia Experiment, attempted to dematerialize one of their own submarines. Going behind the war’s public events reveals a hidden agenda of psychic conflict, fought at the highest level."

Image

I know it was THE WIZARD, MR. JUSTICE, and Kardak, that played a big part in "de-railing" The Council.

ImageImage
Image

When the MLJ heroes did disrupt the mystical power of The Council, ....The War turned in favor of THE ALLIES. The Allies had been losing the War to the AXIS POWERS up until then.

Himmler was aware that someone was attacking The Council.... and that someone or something was affecting the War on the Eastern Front, but he didn't know who .... or how. He did send a "Doctor Satan" to remedy the "problem".

Image

Some of The Legionnaires met The Council somewhere in Europe and mystical forces unleashed in the ensuing battle were of tremendous consequences to the War.
About the battle, I know very little but I know it directly affected the outcome of the German-Russian battle at Stalingrad.

And I believe the turning point of World War II was the Russian Victory at Stalingrad.
The Russian victory at Stalingrad had been possible only because the soviet leader,

Image

Ol' Joe Stalin, a most terrible tyrant of RUSSIA, had allowed two of his best commanders, Georgi Zhukov and Aleksandr Vasilevsky, time and space in the autumn of 1942 to plan the vast encirclement, Operation Uranus, that was to trap the German Sixth Army in Stalingrad and that the strong mystical support for the German armies' occult "protective power" was broken by the MLJ heroes.!!

Many believed that someone took over Stalin's brain during that period and he was incapacitated in the decision making department. Rumors.!?? Lies. Half-truths.?? I couldn't validate such a thing.

THE COUNCIL OF THE SEVEN was made up of Wizards, Warlocks, Witches, and a Zombie King...whose name I can not say. (I do believe that The Druid was part of the Council. And possibly Madam Satan. Not sure of that, though.)
For the most part, The Council of the Seven was broken and dispersed.... and they never had such mystical power again. It was even reported that on the day of the battle between The Legion and The Council, that Aleister Crowley had suffered third degree burns on his hands for no explainable reason.

This is where I should mention more of the MLJ heroes. Some became members...others did not ...for various reasons.

I know that three of the Legion were "real" Nazi-haters, ...and took them on every chance they got.

Image

THE SHIELD, STEEL STERLING, and THE BLACK HOOD. Those three were especially virulent against the Nazis and The Imperial Japanese.
Other MLJ heroes, too, waged War against the Axis Powers but these three were at the forefront of many battles.

JOHN STERLING SAW HIS FATHER BRUTALLY MURDERED BY GANGSTERS. TO AVENGE HIS FATHER'S DEATH, HE PLUNGED HIS BODY INTO A CAULDRON OF AN EXPERIMENTAL MOLTEN METAL. THE RESULTS OF THE EXPERIMENT GAVE HIM THE POWERS OF INVULNERABILITY AND FLIGHT. He used his powers against evil and especially the Nazi threat.

Image

PATROLMAN, KIP BURLAND, WAS ATTACK BY THE SKULL, WHO FRAMED HIM FOR ROBBING A JEWELRY STORE. BURLAND WAS DISCHARGED FROM THE FORCE. WHEN BURLAND TRIED TO CAPTURE THE SKULL ON HIS OWN HE WAS SHOT AND THROWN IN THE WOODS. A MAN CALLED THE HERMIT RESCUED HIM AND TRAINED HIM TO BECOME THE BLACK HOOD. AS THE BLACK HOOD, BURLAND WAS ABLE TO CLEAR HIS NAME. HE NOW FIGHTS CRIME AS BOTH A LAW MAN AND A VIGILANTE. He, too, fought the Nazi plague and the Axis Powers until the end of the War.

Image

Image

Another Vigilante type was the scary HANGMAN.!! His criminal opposition wasn't really sure if he was going to bring them in to the authorities or .... hang them!!

Image

I was glad I wasn't on his "short list". (And I never found out his secret identity. He was too "distant" and, really, just a bit scary to learn much about him.

Another hero from this period was a guy who called himself THE FOX.!!

Image

About THE FOX, I'm afraid I don't know very much. He was active for a time and then, just disappeared.

One hero that I think I should mention, as long as I'm remembering the heroes from the 1940's is ... or should I say was.....called THE COMET.
HIS Legend, during the '40's, was a lot like his name. He burned brightly...very briefly, and then, was gone.

Image

The rumor was that he had been shot. Some say fatally. Then, by word of mouth, there was talk of his body disappearing. A foreign alien force involved. Another planet kind of stuff. I'll go into those rumors later. None of this I can verify. Just rumor. I can't say more.

There were other MLJ heroes that I was aware of. One was THE WEB:
THE WEB WAS REALLY NOTED CRIMINOLOGIST JOHN RAYMOND, WHOSE BROTHER, TIM, WAS A CRIMINAL. AFTER JOHN HELPED THE POLICE CAPTURE HIS BROTHER, HE SET OUT TO AVENGE EVIL AS THE WEB. HE HAS ALSO HAD SEVERAL ADVENTURES WITH HIS BROTHER-IN-LAW THE JAGUAR.

Image

Image

Another costume adventurer -- who I barely knew-- was FIREFLY!!
HARLEY HUDSON, A BIOCHEMIST, DISCOVERS A SECRET WHICH LETS HIM SIMULATE THE TREMENDOUS STRENGTH OF INSECTS. HARLEY HUDSON, A CHEMIST/BIOLOGIST/ENTOMOLOGIST, IS STUDYING INSECTS WHEN HE REALIZES THAT THEIR STRENGTH AND LEAPING ABILITY, SO MUCH GREATER THAN THEIR SIZE, COMES FROM THEIR "WONDERFUL MUSCULAR COORDINATION." SO HE MODELS HIMSELF ON THEM AND SOON GAINS THE SAME ABILITIES, WHICH HE PUTS TO USE IN FIGHTING CRIME. HE HAS SUPERHUMAN STRENGTH AND LEAPING ABILITY.

Image

I did not know .... FIREBALL.
TED TYLER, A FIREMAN, IS KNOCKED UNCONSCIOUS BY AN ARSONIST. INSIDE THE BLAZING LABORATORY HE IS COATED WITH A CHEMICAL BATH THAT GIVES HIM THE POWER TO ABSORB AND CONTROL FLAMES. FIREBALL DEVOTES HIS LIFE TO FIGHTING FIREBUGS WITH FIRE. AS A FIREMAN TED IS A HERO IN BOTH IDENTITIES.

Image

I knew very little of the hero BOB PHANTOM...
BY MEANS UNKNOWN BOB PHANTOM CAN TELEPORT FROM PLACE TO PLACE. WHILE THE LIMITS TO THE RANGE AND FREQUENCY OF USE TO THIS POWER ARE UNCLEAR, BOB PHANTOM CAN MOVE AT LEAST TWICE HIS OWN MASS FOR AT LEAST SHORT DISTANCES. HE HAS BOOSTS IN STRENGTH BEYOND THE AVERAGE PERSON. ON SEVERAL OCCASIONS HE DEFIES THE EFFECTS OF BULLETS BY METHODS UNCLEAR.

BLACKJACK....

ImageImage

JACK JONES, A DETECTIVE WHO LIKES TO PLAY BLACKJACK AT THE POLICE STATION, IS CAPTURED AND PRESUMED MURDERED BY CRIMINALS. HOWEVER, HE ESCAPES, AND GOES UNDERCOVER AS BLACK JACK.

BlackJack I got to know because we ....ok.... played cards together. He won a lot. Geeesh.!! What can I say. It was good past-time when things were slow. I liked him. Even though he won a lot. I did. It was too bad what happened to him. Man, I was really down for a long time.

INFERNO I never knew.
INFERNO IS A CIRCUS FIRE-BREATHER WHO FIGHTS CRIME BY BREATHING FIRE FROM HIS MOUTH; HE CAN BURN HIS WAY THROUGH STEEL DOORS AND WALLS AND CAN MELT BULLETS BEFORE THEY REACH HIM. INFERNO FIGHTS CRIME, AS THE CIRCUS WORKER, MOVING FROM TOWN TO TOWN, AND THEN LATER AS A PRIVATE EYE.

Image

About the last guy I can think of ...(maybe besides Karnak) is CAPTAIN FLAG....and get a load out of this: He's got an Eagle as a pet. He calls the Eagle ....Yank. I don't know. This guy would probably be considered pretty "far right". He's thinking the Communists ... or the Socialists ... or people like that... are trying to get into the Country and destroy it from within. Like I said: I don't know. I don't think the American people want to live under Communism like what Stalin's got in the U.S.S.R., so I don't think it's happenin'. But, yeah, I know him. Don't yank that bird, though. He doesn't have much of a sense of humor, if ya know what I mean.

Image

Image

A MASTER CRIMINAL WHO WANTS THE PLANS FOR THE FATHER’S LATEST INVENTION KIDNAPS TOM TOWNSEND AND HIS INVENTOR FATHER. TOM WATCHES HELPLESSLY AS HIS FATHER IS STRANGLED TO DEATH. AN EAGLE CRASHES THROUGH A WINDOW AND SAVES TOM. THE EAGLE NURSES TOM BACK TO HEALTH. ONE DAY THE EAGLE RETURNS WITH AN AMERICAN FLAG IN ITS BEAK AND TOM TAKES THIS AS AN OMEN. HE MAKES A COSTUME FROM THE FLAG AND RETURNS TO AMERICA TO FIGHT CRIME AS CAPTAIN FLAG.

THE MLJ Heroes fought against criminals, Nazis, Italian Fascists, Imperial Japanese, and any who tried to attack this free society and its struggling democracy.

Here's a picture of most of The 'Mighty' Legion of Justice members (The MLJ) .... with the exception of The Wizard and Roy.

Image

It was the re-forming of what was left of THE COUNCIL that played a part in the mysterious disappearances of the MLJ heroes and some of their friends...after their last recorded adventures.!!

Part III: THE COMING OF....THE MIGHTY CRUSADERS!!

There was a deafening silence during about a 15 year span. The mid-1940's to the late 1950's, I'd say. Then, strangely enough, things began to happen that would affect a new group of heroes.

With the Axis Powers vanquished, the veterans from the War had come home to start their lives anew. They had made "The World safe for democracy." While Europe and Asia were rebuilding from the ruins, the Americans turned their lives to peace time Country building, family making and making "the American Dream" come true.

Then, almost out of nowhere: ....came a "costumed hero"....calling himself...THE SHIELD!!

Image Image

He seemed to have no relationship to the MLJ (The Mighty Legion of Justice) SHIELD except the red, white, and blue costume and a penchant for fighting crime and the enemies of America.
Image

Image
He fought enemy spies, dictators, and foes of America.!!

Image

He exploded onto the "scene" ...but as quickly as he had come, ....he was gone.
I later learned that he was really a Private Lancelot Strong, but he disappeared for a number of years after a few early adventures. I never found out where he was or what had happened to him during that period of time.

Image

One kid I wanted to mention was Bobby Bell. He was a great kid. He reminded me of Dusty.... and maybe a little bit of Roy. Don't know what happened to him, either. I always thought he was going to be the kid side-kick to that new Shield. Didn't happen.

ImageImage

Both Private Lancelot Strong-- The Shield-- and the kid--- Bobby-- were "gone". I just shake my head on that one.

Then, another hero made his appearance on the scene. He, too, was a costumed-crime fighter but he had the tenacity to stay and make a real name for himself. He called himself....THE FLY !!

Image

THE FLY was a remarkable costumed hero that fought the criminal element in a ferocious battle of Good verses Evil.

Image

Him, ....I knew something about.
I met him as a lawyer, Thomas Troy, Attorney at Law, but he told me of his younger self as an orphan who lived with Mr. and Mrs. March:
YOUNG TOMMY TROY SNEAKED INTO THE ATTIC OF HIS FOSTER PARENT, MR. MARCH, WHO WAS RUMORED TO BE A SORCERER. STUMBLING UPON AN UNUSUAL RING, TOMMY PLACED IT ON HIS FINGER AND SUDDENLY FOUND HIMSELF FACE TO FACE WITH TURAN, EMISSARY OF THE FLY PEOPLE. TURAN DESIGNATED TOMMY TO BE THEIR CHAMPION, ENABLING HIM TO WIELD ALL THE POWERS OF THE LOST FLY RACE. BY RUBBING HIS MAGIC RING, HE WAS TRANSFORMED INTO THE MIGHTY FLY.Image

And he inhabited a very strange new world:
Image

In one of his earliest cases, he fought who would be his greatest nemesis: THE SPIDER. ("Spider" Spry was what the Underworld called him. To THE FLY.... he was his ...."SPIDER".Image

Image

Then lightning struck a third time:
....and from a "magic belt"..... came THE JAGUAR!!

Image

Ralph Hardy had put on a magic belt and became the powerful being called THE JAGUAR....

Image

Image

Image
Image

Image

I think there was a suggestion on "The Jaguar's Lair" letter page by Paul Seydor that a group of heroes made up of THE FLY, THE Pvt. Strong SHIELD, FLY GIRL, THE BLACK HOOD, and THE JAGUAR come together as... THE ANTI-CRIME SQUAD.

The time was right for our heroes to come together...because...without their knowing an "Unholy Eight" ....calling themselves...
"The ANTI-FLY LEAGUE" was forming not far away from them.
Image

Image

THE FLYwas continuing his war on crime and faced a number of foes. From Tim O'Casey's Wrecking Crew, to Marco, "The World's Greatest Hypnotist", to The Master of Junk-Ri-Ra, to The Dazzler and many others, the battle was on.

One of THE MLJ heroes returned to the fight against crime and aided THE FLY in an adventure the newspapers labeled "THE FLY and THE BLACK HOOD Join Forces."

ImageImage

HERE is an example of the adventure THE FLY had with THE BLACK HOOD.
It was call ...."THE WORLD OF THE GIANT GORILLAS"!
Image

IN another adventure, the Pvt. Strong-SHIELD came back from wherever he was to side with THE FLY against...
THE MONSTER GANG.
THE FLY and THE SHIELD teamed up again in an adventure called "The Wizard of Nightmares"! Together, they stopped a major "crime-wave" from happening when they slugged it out with a gang in "Devil Masks".

ImageImage

Image

Not long after, THE FLY and THE JAGUAR were joined by .....a movie starlet that was given a "magic ring" of her own.

Image

AMERICA'S SWEETHEART, KIM BRAND, HAS A SECRET. AN ALIEN BEING KNOWN AS TURAN, EMISSARY FROM THE FLY WORLD, HAS GIVEN HER A RING OF GREAT POWER. WHEN SHE SLIPS IT ON HER FINGER SHE IS INSTANTLY TRANSFORMED INTO FLY-GIRL, THE WINGED CRUSADER OF JUSTICE.

SHE IS OFF TO SAVE THE WORLD AND HOPES IT DOESN’T INTERFERE WITH HER MOVIE CAREER.

Kim Brand, as FLY GIRL, worked together with THE FLY.

The two of them had a number of adventures together:

ImageImage

ImageImage

While THE FLY and FLY GIRL were waging their War against super-criminals and aliens from space,
THE JAGUAR was also engaged in his own battle of Good over Evil. Here he engages with one of his more attractive foes: Cat Girl.

Image

Cat Girl was an on going problem for him... and she returned several times.

Image

-----------

So, the three heroes were engaged in battle with whoever or whatever threatened America. Villains of America or villains from outer space the FLY--FLY GIRL TEAM and THE JAGUAR fought them all.

While THE FLY and FLY GIRL were bringing criminals to justice, they didn't see one of their Greatest threats coalescing against them.

Then, there came a day unlike any other:
The debut of THE ANTI FLY LEAGUE . The Spider, The Metal Master, Roxr(King of the Vegetable World), Karl Rance(Racketteer), LXOIII (Weapons Lord From Mars), Linda Drake(Queen of The Amazon Gang),Dovi(the villain from the future), and Bra-KR(the genius from GXAU)-- all previous villains that THE FLY and FLY GIRL had defeated, had decided to come together as a group to defeat their costumed foes.

There was another Group of enemies of THE FLY and FLY GIRL, that banded together to oppose their common foes. The current members include the Spider, Lady Spider, Lxo III, Roxr, Bra-Kr, Dovi, and new members Phantasmon and the Red Shark; former members include the second Metal Master and Karl Rance. This second group I'm not familiar with.
But here is the first group in diabolical action....

Image

One night at State Pen, "The Spider", arch enemy of The Fly - is rescued from his cell by a green four armed-man on a robot flying horse monster. One of the weirdest "Prison Breaks" ever.

Image

"The Anti-Fly League? What's that? You mean a diabolical group of villains dedicated to destroying THE FLY and FLY GIRL?? Count me in, fellas!"

Image

We'll get right to the meeting on destroying these costume "heroes".

Image

So, let's see here: Some of the greatest villains in the known Universe. It couldn't be worse.

Image

Yeah, we get it, Fly Girl is supposed to be hot. Fly Girl is hot. Fine.

Image

It's also important to note that Fly Girl's Buzz Gun works just fine.

Image

Image

I had found out later, that these villains almost fought it out between each other to decide who would go after The Fly first. I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall for that "disagreement." Somehow, I always felt better knowing that super-villains don't always get along. (Even though they all have evil in common.)

Image

Luckily the lair of the Anti-Fly League comes equipped with a Fly-Spinner. Now SPIN THE FLY, Evil Vanna White!

Image

And it's the Spider's turn to try and defeat the guy that keeps sending him back to prison. Well, why not, the law of averages is on his side. (Personally, I would have feared if they had all teamed-up in an attempt to kill THE FLY.
HUBRIS.... gets them, I think.)

Image

The Spider's first ingenious plan is to build a giant mechanical Venus Flytrap, fill it with poison, trap THE FLY....and kill him.

Image

Lucky THE FLY had these powers.!! THE FLY seemed to be "thee main man" of the heroes at this point of time in history.
Only THE JAGUAR was as active in bringing villains to justice. THE BLACK HOOD and THE SHIELD had vanished from the crime busting scene.

Image

The Spider's "Cloud Bird" - a giant bird that hides in the clouds waiting to pounce on The Fly and Fly Girl - is foiled when a convenient passing swarm of locusts tip off our heroes. The locusts then go on to destroy crops in five states, leading to agricultural disaster, but if you expect The Fly to do anything about it, sorry pal! Insects stick together!!

Image

That Spider is some kind of genius. Who would have thought that a giant anteater on the side of the highway would attract any sort of attention?! Genius, I tells ya!

Image

And here a giant anteater wraps his mile-long tongue around Fly Girl's body. I'm not POSITIVE this is some kind of fetish for somebody, but the chances are pretty good.

Image

Luckily the mile-long tongue snaps back like a rubber band and the robot anteater is destroyed, sending giant springs and vacuum tubes flying all over the highway. Come on, Spider, you only have one more chance to defeat The Fly and Fly Girl!

Image

Too bad for you, Spider, that The Fly just happened to have a remote control robot Fly that contained within it a giant hook that The Fly could use to catch your giant robot fish. Just happened to have it lying around, glad to put it to some use finally.

Image

Is anything The Spider did here even remotely a crime? He didn't even break out of jail, he was kidnapped by four-armed dude on the robot space horse. Lawyer up, Spider! Meanwhile Linda and the Anti-Fly League ("Linda"?) prepare to spin the Wheel Of Fly once again.

The FLY and FLY GIRL did, finally, overcome the Anti-Fly League.

I was always convinced that THE SPIDER was always the most dangerous and evil of the bunch. Image

And I was always greatly relieved when I knew he was behind bars.

The TEAM OF THE FLY and FLY GIRL working together was a big success....and during this period the two of them even teamed up with THE JAGUAR for an adventure or two.

Image

And so, the three of them flew off ... to fight the criminal element and the evil alien threats to America, together.

Of this I can't be sure: ....but I suspect that it was the mystical powers of Turan, emissary from The Fly World and his FLY RINGS (one that was found by orphan Tommy Troy and one given to Kim Brand ),.... and the mystical energy of the belt of THE JAGUAR that may have released many of the MLJ heroes from their States of Suspended Animation that THE COUNCIL had magically imposed on them.
The stirring of the mystical energies may have awakened the MLJ heroes. Maybe these NEWLY released magical energies surrounded and penetrated the heroes....that not only freed them but also magically e m b u ed them with a special kind of immortality.

"Something" seemed to have happen because soon after the "release" of those magical energies, some of the MLJ heroes re-emerged and, together with The FLY and FLY GIRL formed a new group of heroes unlike any the World has ever seen: THE MIGHTY CRUSADERS, "costumed heroes who have sworn to battle evil and injustice" wherever they were found.!!

It started out as kind of a "team-up" of the heroes. The FLY-MAN (as THE FLY was calling himself then) was saved by THE COMET, THE SHIELD, and THE BLACK HOOD....each in turn.
Image

Then, the four of them, on a challenge by THE SPIDER (yeah, him again) who called them out by the name of "THE MIGHTY CRUSADERS", teamed up and together, went after THE FLY'S greatest nemesis. Although THE SPIDER escaped, the four heroes were left with the question of whether they should team-up as
THE MIGHTY CRUSADERS and be a force for good in the World or.... go their separate ways.

After being joined by FLY GIRL, and having a couple more Adventures....They decided to become a permanent Super-Hero Team and call themselves (After The Spider's naming)..... THE MIGHTY CRUSADERS!!

Image

THE MIGHTY CRUSADERS fought invaders from space and faced off with THE BRAIN EMPEROR,

Image

battled "Inferno, The Destroyer", and two villains who impersonated The MLJ Heroes: THE WIZARD and THE HANGMAN.

ImageImage

The Mighty Crusaders team consisted of THE FLY, FLY-GIRL, ....A SHIELD who only "seemed" to be the genuine article from the 1940's, The BLACK HOOD, who was the original Black Hood from the 1940's, and THE COMET.... who may have been-- indeed, the original Comet....(remember my earlier reference about an alien planet related to his disappearance. Well, ALTROX was the planet whose inhabitants saved him from a fatal gunshot wound in the early 1940's.) So, at least, I thought, we had four "original" costume heroes in the group.)[The Fly, Fly Girl, The Black Hood and The Comet.] The Shield ...I wasn't so sure about. I was around him a couple of times and he seemed "different." Not the same Shield that I had known in the '40's.

(As it turned out, I was right to be suspicious. The Original SHIELD had been turned into a living statue by a notorious villain, The Eraser, with his Ion Weapon ...trapping Joe Higgins in a form of suspended animation. Joe's son had taken on the mantle of The Shield for his father. Almost the same thing was true, later, of The Black Hood. The "original" Black Hood, Matt "Kip" Burland from the 1940's was killed by The Eraser and his nephew "Kip" Burland stepped in to carry-on the tradition of THE BLACK HOOD.
[which actually happened a little later in our story.]

Anyway, did you happen to notice that MANY of the MLJ heroes that returned in a story the press called: "Too many heroes"... were all looking reasonably young.? (This is now the mid-1960's.) That story was one tale for the ages.
So many MLJ heroes returned wanting to be members of THE MIGHTY CRUSADERS that fights broke out between the heroes.

Image

The Shield, The Wizard, The Fly, The Black Hood, The Comet, Mr. Justice, The Web, The Fox, Fireball, and the other MLJ heroes in fighting disagreement on who should be members of THE MIGHTY CRUSADERS. I, personally, think some malevolent force or forces were controlling them.
For these heroes, this was really unnatural behavior and some very evil force must have been guiding some of the heroes.

BUT there they were... The "original" MLJ heroes....(plus THE FLY) all looking reasonably young and vital ....and at their fighting best. I just wasn't so sure that that meeting was the high point of their careers.
A few adventures after that, .....

Image

Image

......and it seemed that The Mighty Crusaders and The MLJ heroes faded away without a trace.

Also, Mystical energies are really beyond my ability to explain so I'll just leave it alone. But it does seem that these heroes do not seem to age at the same rate as normal human beings do. My speculation on the matter could be right.

Image

But the Heroes had faded from the scene taking their crime-busting Adventures with them. There may be some Adventures that were "untold" around this time, but if there were,--- I was unaware of them.

------------------------

Then, in the early 1980's, THE MIGHTY CRUSADERS RETURNED again.

Image

There was a noticeable change in the line-up of the group. The original five: The Fly, The Shield, The Black Hood, Fly Girl, and The Comet were back. Returning was the long lost Pvt. Strong-SHIELD who had disappeared back in 1960's, THE "missing up until now" JAGUAR, who, like the Pvt. Strong Shield, had been so long unaccounted for .....The original COMET in a different costume, ---a differently dressed, new generation BLACK HOOD without the original Black Hood costume and not the original Black Hood, ---and (where did he come from?)THE WEB.

Anyway, something has slowed their aging process down, and now, with their latest return, they seem to have maintained a good deal of their youth and vitality. Good for them. And good for us.

The Brain Emperor, Eterno, and other nefarious threats had re-emerged to threaten America again.

Image

Teamed together, these heroes became America's Greatest Crime-fighting group of costume heroes in the Modern Times.

I'm glad The MLJ heroes have returned and whether they call themselves The Mighty Legion of Justice or The Mighty Crusaders, America... and the World will be better off because of them.

Image

They fought against tyranny, evil, and injustice. Their re-appearance was just what was needed.

THE FLY and FLY GIRL RETURNED!!

Where they went, I wasn't sure. But I did poke around and try to find them.... but turned up nothing.

Part IV: THE MOST RECENT RETURN OF THE MIGHTY CRUSADERS.

Anyway, something has slowed their aging process down, and now, with their latest return, they seem to have maintained a good deal of their youth and vitality. Good for them. And good for us.

Image

HOPES RUN HIGH FOR THE RETURN (again) of THE MIGHTY CRUSADERS.!!

Image

....TO RENEW their fight against tyranny, evil, and injustice....

And continue their fight for Freedom, Justice, and Liberty....for America and all mankind.

The FOX has, also, returned to the battle--- though he seems to be a little more light-hearted than his predecessors.

Image

....and he has teamed up with THE SHIELD.... BUT the adventure took The Fox back to the past of The Second World War!! And home again to the PRESENT.

Image

THOSE WERE THE DAYS....when real evil walked the Earth. The Nazis, the Imperial Japanese armies, the "Final Solution", and a real fight against totalitarian forces that threatened the freedom of man.

Of course, The Druid was involved in THE FOX'S adventure. I had hoped that The WIZARD, ZAMBINI, and MR. JUSTICE had destroyed THE COUNCIL. Seems like they weren't completely successful.
The Evil from that COUNCIL OF THE SEVEN was not that easily vanquished.

And here is the latest: Again, ... The Return of THE MIGHTY CRUSADERS!!(9/20/15)

Part V: THE POSSIBILITY OF "ALTERNATE WORLDS".

I just wanted to add a small addition in case some of the MLJ and Mighty Crusaders fans would like to know this:

There were two or three adventures that these heroes have had that reflect on "Adventures in Alternate Universes." These stories were touched upon in private conversations but there is no way I can verify any of them.

Here is one adventure: The Mighty Crusaders encounter a "time conquering" villain named "Kang". The details about this incident are very unclear. The Comet seemed very confused when relating this tale.

Image

A second adventure: This "mysterious" adventure is clearly set in the 1940's ...during The War.... on an "Alternate Earth"...that defies explanation.

Image

And a third mysterious Adventure: Our heroes encounter a man dressed as a Bat-creature. Again, another Adventure that defies any rational explanation.

Image

So, I add that "Alternate Universes" and string theory may very well have some basis in reality, I can find very little actual proof, ....or tangible evidence of truth.

Hold everything.!! I just found this: It was slipped under my door in the dead of night. I wonder how ANYONE could have possibly known what I was writing. This is beyond coincidence.

Image

11:30 on June 16, 2014. I'm not saying it's any kind of proof. But it could point to something. You be the judge.
I know what I think.

Part VI: Clarification and expansion:

I just wanted to add a post-script here. Someday, somebody is going to finally tell the true stories of--
The Mighty LEGION OF JUSTICE (The MLJ), and no one will be happier than I.
This picture, taken after one of their first adventures (for posterity) is where I'd like to start.

This is probably the second or third time these heroes got together as a group. A photographer friend of mine took the picture. A picture of Historical reference (and proof) that The LEGION OF JUSTICE did actually exist. (at least, with this particular group. I recall that Kalthar didn't want to remain in the group... or stay in "civilization". He wanted to return to "his world" of the African Jungle.)

Image

The members, you may remember, were:

THE SHIELD, G-Man Extraordinary and Dusty, the Boy Detective:

Image

....and THE WIZARD, the Man with the Super-Brain and Roy, the Super-Boy:

Image

When the four of them weren't teaming up together in adventures like this:

Image

The SHIELD and THE WIZARD were teamed up on War Missions like this:

Image

The Four of them together were call "America's Greatest Champions of Justice".!! ....according to the Press.

That all changed when these "Champions of Justice" were aided by three others:

THE FIRST:..... the most mysterious Force the world has ever known. A Force known only to mortal beings as ...
The Incredible MR. JUSTICE.

Image

A SECOND: Zambini, The Miracle Man

Image

And, a Third: KALTHAR, THE GIANT JUNGLE MAN.

Image

Yes, THAT'S when the press labeled THE SEVEN of them.....

Image

...THE MIGHTY LEGION OF JUSTICE, America's Greatest Champions of Justice!!! The World's Greatest Heroes!! And with such press, The GREAT LEGACY of The MLJ was established.!!

The line-up changed from time to time, (Kalthar wanting to return to "his" Jungle ...and Mr. Justice leaving to take care of some things on the Astral Plane....and even Zambini had mystical business "elsewhere".)... but the Group was named and it stuck. The Mighty Legion of Justice. The MLJ.

The Press, and even my newspaper, would sometimes quote U.S. servicemen when The Allies were headed to Berlin....or to Tokyo:

"ALL THE WAY... WITH MLJ"
They knew these heroes were behind them always.!! It made a big difference to the War Effort.!!

Like I said, the line-up changed from time to time... but their deeds were "sterling". They never brought shame or disgrace on America.... and they made all of us proud to be Americans.

They fought for FREEDOM, LIBERTY, and JUSTICE for us all.!!

Image

And all I can say is: ALL THE WAY....WITH THE MLJ!!!

I wonder where the other members of The Council of The Seven like THE BLACK WITCH are now.??

I'm not bringing in the name of Sabrina here, but I'll do something I said to myself I wouldn't do:

Heroes saying their oaths!!

Image

I always liked this Dick Ayers SHIELD page. It shows HISTORY!! I never liked that mask on The Black Hood, though.
That mask belonged to the cycle-riding, black jacketed Black Hood that had the pepper-gun.

An interesting shot of the ultimate creators of the MLJ heroes....and a picture of their GREATEST NEMESIS!!!

The beginning of THE MIGHTY CRUSADERS !! It all started here!!

Or....here.

And here's a scene from one of their last adventures in the 1960's:

I have to admit I know nothing about this adventure of The Crusaders battling The Maestro.

They were a great group that never really reached their full potential.!!

IX. HEROES: ... and the 1940's MLJ

THE BLACK HOOD: Man of Mystery

He exploded off the front pages, fighting criminals of every sort.
Image

THE BLACK HOOD wasn't only a "Man of Mystery"... he was a pretty good detective.!!
Image

From criminals to mad scientists, THE BLACK HOOD took on "all comers".
Image

He had his own Radio show!! And put criminals on the run!!
Image

His Greatest Nemesis: THE SKULL
Here, The Black Hood, The Wizard and Roy, the Super-Boy go after The Skull.!! That adventure almost cost them their lives. The Skull was an extremely dangerous villain, and this was one of their most exciting adventures.!!
Image

A GREAT VILLAIN WITH AN ATTITUDE !!
Image

Here, THE WIZARD, ROY, and THE BLACK HOOD battle an "army of zombies of the night" sent by
The Zombie King.!!

Image

The Man of Mystery also teamed-up with The Man of Steel, STEEL STERLING!!

Image

Together, THE BLACK HOOD and STEEL STERLING had a number of exciting adventures together!!

Image

Image

One of their Adventures brought them into conflict with Black Hood's greatest nemesis: The SKULL!!
THE SKULL was at his most dangerous when he was cornered.

Image

A second meeting was almost as deadly... but this time, THE SKULL was battered and captured.
Image

Somehow, THE SKULL escaped and plotted to put another of his evil plans into play only to run into The SHIELD, DUSTY, THE WIZARD and ROY!
Image

THE BLACK HOOD and STEEL STERLING really made a GREAT TEAM!!
Image

But, I have to say, if you've got STEEL STERLING on your side, .......you have a real advantage!!
ImageImage

THE SKULL continued to menace society at large, ...but THE BLACK HOOD was tenacious in battling him to a stand-still.
I often wondered if the two of them were locked into some greater struggle that could only end in the death of one or the other of them.
Image

I do know that the battle between them went on....and on. For a while, THE WIZARD (and Roy) teamed up with THE BLACK HOOD to track down THE SKULL.
Image

STEEL STERLING also teamed up with THE WEB...from time to time.
Image

They had a few exciting Adventures, too. STEEL STERLING was a real "crime-buster"!!
Image

Here's a picture of STEEL STERLING getting INFERNO to burn through a lock. Unusual ??

Image

STEEL STERLING, MR. JUSTICE, and THE BLACK HOOD!

Image

STEEL STERLING and BLACKJACK!!

Image

AND STEEL STERLING and BLACKJACK again.

THE END of the MLJ/ Radio/Archie Adventure Series/ Red Circle History

Thank you, Brad. I thought no one would read it. Thanks for your endurance.!! I appreciate it... more than you know.
I really hope you enjoyed it.
If anyone else out there liked it, -- enjoyed it --- please let me know.

I started it because I wanted a 'spine' to the history of MLJ-Archie Adventure Series-Radio-Red Circle- Dark Circle story ... in hopes that somebody would rethink and start writing new Stories of The Mighty Crusaders. Seems I have failed miserably ... with the exception that just today I saw Dark Circle was reprinting the stories of 'The Lost Crusade'. Well, ...not a reprint ... but digital...
Hope still stirs. And I can only hope somebody at Dark Circle actually does do a Mighty Crusaders title... with The Shield, The Wizard, The Black Hood, Steel Sterling, The Comet, The Fox, Mr. Justice, The Hangman .... and with the other MLJ heroes.

The spine starts to run a little thin by the end of Part IV. But, hey-- I haven't given up yet.!!
Here is what gives me hope:

THE MIGHTY CRUSADERS: THE LOST CRUSADE is now available exclusively on @ComiXology!
Image

(Please note that THE SHIELD has FOUR stars on his chest.
One star each for: TRUTH!, COURAGE!, PATRIOTISM!, and JUSTICE!

Has the 'real' Joe Higgins -- The SHIELD-- finally returned!!??)
