There's nothing planned at the moment, but perhaps six months from now, when
the newsstand sales figures are in (it takes longer to track those sales than
sales in comic shops because the newsstand system is returnable), if there was
a spike in that issue, that may convince Archie management to take a chance.
But overall, the comic market is pretty dicey right now to launch a new
superhero comic...

Actually, what I would love to see though I know it's unlikely, is a
collection of all the little "Know Your Heroes" strips which presented
the Archie heroes' origins in Batman Adventures cartoon style.

Do you think other readers would mind if those strips were run as part of a
48-page special? That would make it like one regular 22 page story plus all
the origins. Do you think other fans would like that, or feel ripped off by
it? I keep debating it myself, but I think that might be one way to do it...

My two-cents: I can't speak for other comic shops, but I think such a one-shot
would do very well in MY shop. It would help a lot if the 22-page story was
all-new (as opposed to, say, a reprint of a Red Circle Mighty Crusaders story
from the '80s), but in any event, it would be talked up very heavily around
here. The big point as I see it would be in how this special would be
promoted. For example, a full page ad in Previews would probably be more
effective than an ad in all the standard Archie titles, at least in getting the
attention of the Heroes fans. Of course, that depends on who the target
audience is.

If it was *all* the origin sequences that had been done, then yeah, it
would be nice to have a story along with the short pieces. I
*wouldn't* be interested in just seeing:
(a) a small number of origins of just the more familiar characters, or
just the ones who appeared in the main story. Before reading the "Know
Your heroes" segment, for example, I had no idea what the origin of
Black Jack was.
(b) 22 heroes crammed into the main story just to justify all the
origin sequences! As interested as I am in all the trivia I don't
necessarily want to read an issue devoted to Black Jack.

It's an awkward sort of project, in a way ... I'm not sure what sort of
story would be best to tell, given that this is meant to be
representative of the Archie Comics universe to readers who wouldn't be
familiar to it. I don't think a *new* character is the way to go
either.

After some thought, taking into account that Archie also has a heavy
female readership, one possibility would be to focus on a character who
wouldn't have a "Know Your Heroes" segment: Darkling. I imagine a solo
case, but one which allows brief cameos by ... say ... three other
Archie characters? Sabrina the Teenage Witch would be good (albeit not
the whole Archie gang) and maybe the token black scientist character
who wore tights, also from the last Crusaders series, and one other, an
established hero whom Archie sees as their front runner.

I really don't think most fans would be ripped off by having the extra
story, because frankly most mainstream comic fans are not the audience
that buys the Archie digests ... I just happened to have skimmed
through that one by accident. I definitely think, though, that the
book should be released in both formats, a digest (maybe with some
Sabrina back up strips if that means extra pages, I don't know what the
page count for digests is) for the supermarkets and a 48-pager for the
comics geeks. If the extra pages *were* Sabrina, that would (a) tie
thematically into the main story the way I've envisaged it, (b) not
piss off the comics geeks who'd probably be indifferent to the
character and (c) provide a familiar touchpoint for the readers of the
digests.

I hope some of this has been useful!

Hi, Paul. I'll put in my two cents. I think origin stories with a 22 page new
story would work well for my point of view. It would be a good way to relaunch
the characters. Since you are doing the characters in the "WB animated style,"
your story may wish to reflect that. What I mean is that the material should be
played straight, but in a simple fashion a la Batman Adventures and Superman
Adventures comics. The story can contain villains like Brain Emporer, etc., but
give them a semblence of realism and motivation as opposed to making them
cardboard cutouts. Do the same with the heroes, but don't make the material too
complicated. The easier it is for kids to read, the bigger potential for the
audience. If the stuff was well written, I'd buy on a regular basis just to
read. Advertise in Previews as well as cross promote through the Archie books.
Get some critical postive letters from the pundits out there.

Good luck.

Sincerely,
Neil A. Hansen

Sound advice from a sage! Thanks, Neil. We'll see what happens. It doesn't
seem very likely there'll be any further Crusaders activity anytime soon, but
again, a noticeable spike once the newsstand sales figures are in (6 months
down the road) could possibly change that. Hey, stranger things have happened,
right?...
