In a recent CSN, it talked about the Mighty Crusaders (Shield, Fly, etc)
guest starring in an Archie comic. I thought DC now owns these
characters. Did DC lisence them for Impact or something?

Since Archie's track record with super-heroes has been spotty, they published
the Impact line through DC somehow. (I forget the exact details.) In practice,
Impact was the farm team for DC.

As you note, Archie's Weird Mysteries will feature a cameo by the Mighty
Crusaders. In fact, if you've been reading the Archie digests, you'll have seen
brief origins of the Crusader heroes, done in a BTAS style.
Whether Archie Comics has a series planned, or is just keeping the copyright
alive, is anyone's guess.

That's correct. Impact was just done through a licencing agreement, not
through the characters actually being sold to DC. When the Impact line was
discontinued, the characters went back to Archie.

DC was definintely responsible for producing the books (as well as
publishing them).

>In practice, Impact was the farm team for DC.

You mean in terms of creators, I assume, not characters (since the
characters could never move to "the big league"). That's not entirely
true, as some of the people involved in Impact already had established
relationships with DC, doing other work.

Trademark, not copyright. Copyright protection lasts for a certain period
of time, regardless of whether the material is used. Trademark protection
lapses if you don't use it on a product periodically.

My guess would be that the writer of Weird Mysteries likes the characters,
and the appearance helps protect the intellectual property.

Didn't they also appear on the Archie web site, along with Katy Keene?

The TV show or an ADVENTURES comic?

My girlfriend misses KATY KEENE.

There was a pin-up there, a few months ago.

Whether because of nostalgia or some other reasons, I prefer the original
versions of the characters anyway. If Archie wants to bring them back, it
should do what everyone is doing: inter-company crossover. I've always
wanted a Spider-Man/Fly team-up, or a Shield/Captain America, pre &
post-hibernation.

Hi. I'm the writer of the "Archie's Weird Mysteries" series. Perhaps I can
clear some things up:

1.) Archie always owned the Mighty Crusaders characters. DC licensed the
characters for comics, just like Archie licenses Sonic The Hedgehog from Sega
for comic books. DC never owned them.

2.) The Mighty Crusaders do indeed appear in issue #3 of "Archie's Weird
Mysteries," but it's much more than just a cameo-- it's a full-length epic! I
like to think of it as "Too Many Superheroes 2000!" For those of you who
remember that wacked-out tale from the 1960s run of the Crusaders...

Anyway, that's the skinny. Look for "Archie's Weird Mysteries #3" to hit comic
shops on February 9th!

Best regards,

Paul Castiglia
