#3 - The Fly (with Joe Simon)

"Long before Marvel’s web-crawling hero, Joe Simon and Jack Kirby created The Fly for Archie’s Red Circle imprint in the late 50s. In a way, The Fly bridged the gap between colorful heroes like The Flash and Superman with older, pistol-brandishing heroes like The Shadow and The Phantom. Although Kirby and Simon only did a handful of issues, Archie has continued to reinvigorate the character time and time again."

Awesome to see that! Nice to see Satan's Six in there too. A pity though, as you get the impression they think his DC/Marvel work was obviously far better, but out of that selection i would say that The Fly at least holds his own along with New Gods, Mister Miracle and Kirby's Jimmy Olsen, and probably beats Kamandi and Forever People hands down!

(one thing though, they are wrong about Kirby and Simon working for Red Circle in the fifties, though i think it's very very interesting that every iteration of MLJ/Radio Comics/Mighty Comics/Archie Adventure is seemingly being repainted with the Red Circle logo nowadays! At least it gives us some consistent brand to refer to though!)

PS - and what about The Double Life of Private Strong? I would say it was far better than eg Fighting American, though obviously it only ran for two issues...

I think "Red Circle" is the new generic brand name for all things related to Archie's super hero lines of comics. After all, DC started as National Allied Publications & ended up merging with Detective Comics Inc. to form National Comics. In 1944, National absorbed an affiliated concern, All-American Publications. It then became National Periodical Publications, which is now DC Entertainment (its new corporate identity). TMI? So... Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, et al are "DC Comics."

BTW: I'm a big Fighting American fan, mostly for its parody of the era. Lancelot Strong, not so much.

Yes, I loved Fighting American and Speedboy, too!!

AND....I wished the DOUBLE LIFE OF PRIVATE STRONG had gone on for many more issues.
I was really hoping for a team-up of THE FLY and THE SHIELD.... circa 1960. Was so disappointed that it never happened.
The closest it got to my "hoping" ....was Buckler's MIGHTY CRUSADERS #1-2. The four of them teamed-up.
THE FLY, THE SHIELD, FLY-GIRL, and THE JAGUAR!! I tried to be happy with that.

Wish Jack had had more time to work on and develop SATAN'S SIX. (I miss him, alot.)
He gave us so much.

Captain, (and Calum) did either of you notice that Fly-Girl seems to have changed her name.??
I think she's going to call herself: Firefly!! [See the cover of New Crusaders #4.)

(And THE FLY moves farther away from us.!!) Written out....and lost in the annuals of time.

well Lancelot Strong did team up with The Fly in Adventures of the Fly issue 8 (and also 9 according to this: ,!-- m -->, class="postlink" ,="http://darkmark6.tripod.com/mighty_index.html">http://darkmark6.tripod.com/mighty_index.html,!-- m --> though that's the issue i haven't got, so can't check it)

It's not Simon/Kirby*, but it was quite a good story, although i remember they behaved like they already knew each other even though it was their first meeting (that we know about).

It was reprinted in an "Alan Class" black and white reprint in the UK, which is where i first read this story, in fact it was the first time i'd encountered the Lance Strong version of the Shield, come to think of it.

* it's Bernstein and Giunta in fact: ,!-- m -->, class="postlink" ,="http://dc.wikia.com/wiki/Adventures_of_the_Fly_Vol_1_8">http://dc.wikia.com/wiki/Adventures_of_the_Fly_Vol_1_8,!-- m -->
