Phil found the ad for the cover and Greg was nice enough to color it for us.

That's great, Rik.
I got the flyer with that alternate, unpublished cover in a huge comics purchase of vintage back issues, with another Halifax, Nova Scotia comics collector. I asked him for the flyer as I knew that cover had never been published.

I also got in that buy other flyers with alternate, never published covers of comics from other publishers, including Dave Cockrum's Futurians.
It looks great coloured!

Best,

Phil Latter

Was an actual story written and drawn for issue #14? If so, was it ever printed in a digest or another form? If not, is it in storage or in someone's collection?

Glad you all liked it.... it was a bear to do primarily because of its size! Lot's of the details I had to guess at, and looking at it again, the Shield's strips are a bit off... ah well... :>)

Greg is being modest. It was small, scanned at an angle and on tan paper.
It was a lot of work.

As far as I know there was never a finished comic. The black and white covers are done in advanced for Previews.

Based on this picture, is it safe to assume that an actual, full size cover was done? If so, I wonder where it is...

Yes, Rik... and it would be great if there was art from that issue. Maybe the Ayers estate would allow Archie to reprint it... in a final digest of the Crusaders.
That would enhance the collection... and be a real enjoyment to "diehard" Crusader fans... to have that story.... that was never released.
Just the cover would add to the collection... and whatever story ...reprinted and colored would be of value.

I wished we could get more "professional" artists to draw the MLJ-Archie Heroes... so we could post them here on your site.
Maybe after the heroes start appearing in B&B... some artists will draw our heroes... and add to The Crusaders site.

At the last mini-Con we had here,... I asked Rich Buckler if he would draw the Crusaders for me...
but the price was a little steep... and I couldn't afford it at the time. I like some of Rich's work... because sometimes he could almost "channel" a little Jack Kirby.

I once met Jack Kirby at the Con in Chicago... and wanted to ask him if he would draw The Fly and The Shield(Pvt. Strong)....together...in one drawing...
and The Manhunter, The Guardian and the Newsboy Legion, and Sandman and Sandy in another...
but I was so struck with who I was meeting... I just forgot it all.
At that time, I could have easily paid whatever Jack might have asked.

I always loved Dick Ayers inking on those early F.F. stories. I thought he did a great job.
I so wanted him to ink Jack's Avengers. All of them. He didn't... and I feel a little poorer because of it.

I did post the colored pages from the unpublished Shield story. I have not found interiors for this issue.

Oh, man,... Rik, That WAS a fun read. A few mis-spellings(...GREAT DANGRR --bottom of page 3) ... and wrong word balloon (page 16)...

but all in all... it was a fun read. Marty and Dick did a pretty good job.
Even T.M. Maple--who wrote a good number of fan letters... had a good letter on the letter page.
Wonder who inked it??

Thanks, Rik.
Like I said-- I liked this Series... The Original Shield... and having issues #1-4... this was a nice cap to the series. Wished we would have gotten to the next issue or two. Sounds like Marty had some real plans.

The Hun was a good villain ... and some of Dick's art was pretty decent.
